• HUMAN WITH TAILS? We had a classroom discussion about vestigial structures and I'd recalled reading that something like 1 in 500,000 babies were born with nub-like tail structures that had to be removed surgically immediately after birth, though rarely involving complications. Turns out I misremembered, and pretty badly in fact. A person being born with vestigial tail is a SURPASSINGLY RARE EVENT, such that only 30-40 cases appear in medical literature, and usually it's associated with Spina Bifida (a birth defect wherein part of the spinal cord is exposed through--hence unprotected by, and even damaged by--the vertebral column.).

• WHY DO HUMANS BLUSH? And how does that even happen?
https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/inside-the-mind/emotions/blush.htm The "how" is relatively easy to explain: adrenaline causes the muscles lining facial veins to relax a little, the veins obtain a greater diameter which brings more blood nearer to the skin's surface. (Which also refutes the claim that veins are blue, or the claim that blood is blue until it is exposed to air.) BUT WHY, though. There are many theories, but the one that makes the most evolutionary sense *to me* is the theory that blushing signals embarrassment, which in turn necessitates a certain level of intelligence AND recognition of fault. That is, that you're smart enough to know you made a mistake AND you regret it, to one degree or another. The idea being that if an enemy sees you blushing he/she is less like to wish--or perpetrate!--ill upon you!

• Can hypnosis reveal "buried" memories? We talked about this during and after watching the HOUSE M.D. episode "House's Head, Wilson's Heart," in which House takes a shot on the noggin and has short term memory amnesia. Here, UK hypnosis expert Mark Tyrell discusses the gap between what is commonly assumed about memory and hypnosis, and what is observable in practice. If something horrific happens either to us, or we observe it, "...We might choose not to think about it, but we know it happened. If it is very emotional and traumatic it might be hard to express it verbally because the memory is locked into the hippocampus - the short term memory processing part of the brain. Recalling it will alert the amygdala...so it will be difficult or impossible to talk about because it's always harder to speak during fight or flight. This doesn't mean the memory has been buried. It also does not mean that if someone experiences panic attacks or depression that some unresolved, forgotten-about issue from their past needs to be 'discovered'. " It's telling to me that a clinician who uses hypnosis in his daily practice, (i.e. who stands to gain much by the existence of "repressed/buried" memories) acknowledges how medical science has no evidence at all that this is how human memory works. (For some powerful dissenting opinion--but I'll point out, no supportive research--read the comments section after Tyrell's article.)
